Joao Plata named Latin Player of the Week!

Yes, this is a thing.

Real Salt Lake forward Joao Plata has been recognized as the Latin Player of the Week (MLS SOCCER STORY) , his first  since MLS began this player recognition piece last year. Joao Plata has been integral in the success of RSL thus far this season, with goals in each of the first two matches. This has been huge for RSL with both Robbie Findley and Devon Sandoval out with injuries.

In a lot of ways I think the new adaptation of the RSL way of playing the 4-4-2 diamond midfield has allowed Plata to thrive.

Matt Montgomery over at RSL Soapbox did a fantastic break down of Plata’s goal against San Jose (here), and really that goal and more so the one v LA are a glimpse of the player we all hoped that Plata would be. The dynamic run in behind the defense vs LA ( here)and  long run into space with a bit of technical skill to get the goal against SJ (here) are signs that Plata is onto something this season and that he deserves the honor.

Hot strikers are a rare commodity at times, and to have one like Joao going into a really important stretch of the season will be critical.

Well done Platita.
