MLS Power Rankings Week 4 - RSL On the Upswing

It’s hard to think of a more dramatic weekend of action in a regular season of MLS. Stoppage time goals were plentiful this weekend. The drama being at this level early in the season makes you wonder if we’re in for something really special this year. Here are the power rankings in the eyes of Northbank after week 4.

Power Rankings

Next up
1. Columbus Crew (Last Week: 2, Won 2-1 at Sea) Patrick: This team is impressive. They have quietly made really good additions through the off season and found the right coach for the team. They beat a Seattle team I thought might have found it's form in Seattle. That's impressive.Jake: Last minute heroics with Meram just dropping a bomb on Seattle. The red card may have been a bit harsh for Seattle, but in the end the Crew capitalized. The are rolling. Next: SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 6:00 PM vs TFC
COLUMBUS CREW STADIUM
2. Sporting KC(Last Week: 3, Won 3-2 at COL)Patrick: Good teams smell blood in the water and take advantage of it. That's exactly what this team did in Colorado this weekend. After giving up 2 consecutive penalty kicks they came storming back and took full advantage of their extra man. Not the prettiest of results, but a big one.Jake: This is a team that had yet to score a goal in the run of play all season up until this match. They have ended that drought with emphasis. The defending champs find ways to win. Big game this weekend v RSL. Next: SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 20148:30 PM v RSL
SPORTING PARK
3.Real Salt Lake(Last Week: 5, Won 3-0 v TFC) Patrick: The only reason they aren't on the top is because KC and CBus had very impressive road wins. This was the most complete performance from RSL under new head coach Jeff Cassar. If they play like that, with the wing backs involved in the play, they'll be very hard to contain.Jake: An energized and efficient RSL team should scare everyone. If this team can maintain this form, where will the ceiling be? There's still room for improvement, but Cassar seems to have found a new gear for RSL. Next: SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 8:30 PM vs SKC
SPORTING PARK
4. Vancouver Whitecaps (Last Week: 8, Won 2-1 v HOU)Patrick: An impressive home win against the perceived top team in the league deserves recognition. These guys are a different team on their home carpet field. Now to find a way to bottle that up and take it on the road.Jake: At home Vancouver seem very good. If they can figure out how to not fall apart on the road they may just have something. Next: SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 6:30 PM vs Colorado
BC PLACE
5. Houston Dynamo (Last Week: 1, Lost 1-2 at VAN)Patrick: They lost but they didn't look dominated in the process. This team is going to make the playoffs again. And they'll probably play Kansas City in the ECF. Why do we even bother with the regular season?Jake: Dom has a magic that I just don't get. Granted, I don't follow Houston closely, but I feel like the constantly over perform. A loss to VAN at home isn't a disgrace, but they'll bounce back. Playing Dallas this week should be a good one!SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 8:00 PM vs Dallas
BBVA COMPASS STADIUM
6. FC Dallas (Last Week: 7, Won 2-1 v POR) Patrick: Like Vancouver, this team is just a different beast at home. They are doing well to take advantage of their heavy home schedule to start the season. Still, I want to see this team impress me on the road.Jake: So this Dallas team, if you didn't know, is pretty good. Playing a lot at home is a real advantage, but they have their first big road test this weekend at HOU. Texas Derby or whatever. Should be a good watch. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 8:00 PM vs HOU
BBVA COMPASS
7. LA Galaxy (Last Week: 6, BYE)Patrick: Maybe when we see this team play someone other than RSL we can get a grip on where they stand.Jake: A lot of potential. Moved down because of the other teams that played. Up against Chivas this week they should win, but could the Goats surprise everyone? Probably not. SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 2014 3:00 PM vs Chivas
STUBHUB CENTER
8. Toronto FC (Last Week: 4, Lost 0-3 at RSL)Patrick: A nice slice of humble pie was served at the RioT to the newly made DP filled team. Don't confuse this single result with the ability of this team, though. They have lots of talent and, if we're being honest, we're missing some very vital pieces against RSL. They'll bounce back.Jake: The big concern for these guys right now are the injuries sustained against RSL on the weekend. Without Defoe and Cesar they may be helpless against a very good Columbus team. Next: SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 6:00 PM vs Crew
COLUMBUS CREW STADIUM
9. Chivas USA(Last Week: 10, Draw 1-1 at NY) Patrick: Oh Chivas. One of the many victims of the late heroics this weekend. They were just a few minutes away from getting the full 3 points against the defending supporters shield champions. This team isn't the pushover they were in 2013. They'll compete.Jake: A tough draw v NYRB. Chivas fans may have a legitimate gripe for a couple calls not going their way in this one, but they'll need to find a way to win games like these to push up in the standings. SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 2014 3:00 PM vs LAG
STUBHUB CENTER
10. Philadelphia Union (Last Week: 9, Draw 1-1 v MTL) Patrick: Does this team play to the level of their competition? That's a habit of a lot of young talented teams. They don't know how to play consistently. Drawing at home to Montreal isn't what this team is capable of.Jake: PHI should have had this game in the bag. Questionable PK call, maybe? All that said they had the opportunities to put this away and didn't. Chicago will be a test for them this weekend. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 5:00 PM vs CHI
TOYOTA PARK
11. New York Red Bulls (Last Week: 13, Draw 1-1 v CHV)Patrick: They didn't move up because of their late heroics but more because the other middle teams had rough weekends. I'm still a bit baffled by this team. I think the age of the stars is catching up with them.Jake: Let's just call the draw what it was, LUCKY. This team still doesn't quite make sense and I really am convinced that they are just old and worn out. If they don't beat MTL the alarm bells should sound, and loud. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 4:00 PM vs MTL
OLYMPIC STADIUM
12. New England(Last Week: 17, Won 2-1 at SJ)Patrick: They goonied the goonies in Goonie land. I still think this team has a lot of areas of concern, but for the week they looked pretty confident.Jake: Confidence can carry you, but only so far. This team still needs work. I really expect more from them. Was last season a fluke? Playoff luck? Gotta see some consistency. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 7:00 PM vs DCU
RFK STADIUM
13. Seattle Sounders (Last Week: 11, Lost 1-2 v CLB) Patrick: What to think with this team? They looked improved on the soccer side of the ball but completely crapped the bed to finish it out. Leaving a man completely unmarked around your 18 on a corner at the end of the game? Bold move, Cotton.Jake: I said in last weeks rankings, this team would be interesting without Dempsey. I thought, honestly, that they might find some goals early without him, didn't see Cooper scoring though. HOW DO YOU NOT FINISH OFF THIS GAME? Also, Sigi getting pissed at Chad Marshall after the game was awesome. Cascadia on the weekend. This will be fun. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 3:00 PM vs PTFC
PROVIDENCE PARK
14. Colorado Rapids (Last Week: 12, Lost 2-3 v SKC)Patrick: Will this team ever score when it's not a penalty (or a missed penalty followed up)? The sheer stupidity by Marvell Wynne in this one lost them the points. Absolutely no reason to go into the tackle he did to get his second yellow.Jake: I wish that it was a team that wasn't SKC that beat Colorado, I do. But I think they illustrated that there are some gaps on the field for the Rapids that need filling. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 6:30 PM VAN
BC PLACE
15. Montreal Impact (Last Week: 18, Draw 1-1 at PHI)Patrick: Di Vaio back = goal. The guy is a huge difference for them. Still, their defense is far from great. With Di Vaio they can hide it and get into shootouts. That's not a recipe for success long term, though.Jake: Lucky to get the PK call. They should have more going forward but it feels like Di Vaio is on an island. Have to find a midfield and get him some decent support. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 4:00 PM vs NYRB
OLYMPIC STADIUM
16. Portland Timbers (Last Week: 14, Lost 1-2 at DAL) Patrick: This team continues to look confused offensively. They don't utilize what made them so successful last year. I feel they may have added too many pieces in a hunt to improve something that didn't really need much improving.Jake: COME ON. I don't understand how this is possible. The most frustrating part about this is the CCL berth that was given (STOLEN BY!!!) this team. Good luck with that. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 3:00 PM vs SSFC
PROVIDENCE PARK
17. San Jose (Last Week: 15, Lost 1-2 v NE)Patrick: I'm sure many took a lot of pleasure in watching these guys lose at home late in a game for a change. They seem to be on an emotional decline after nearly pulling off the impossible in Mexico. A bye week might be just the right thing to get their focus again.Jake: Really tough loss for the Quakes. Dose of their own medicine and what not. They need to find a spark, soon. BYE
18. Chicago Last Week: 16, Draw 2-2 at DC)Patrick: Something needs to change. This team needs someone in the middle of the pitch to step up and run the games better. As is, they have talent up top and in the back but lose the midfield way too easily.Jake: I want this to be harsh for CHI but it makes sense completely. Their lack of possession in the midfield cripples them. Figure that out and they'll bounce up the table. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 5:00 PM vs PHI
TOYOTA PARK
19. DC United (Last Week: 19, Draw 2-2 v CHI)Patrick: Some late heroics against fellow cellar dweller doesn't bump this team off the bottom of the heap. They're bad. They are the team with talent on paper that has no idea how to put it together on the field. I think it's beyond Olsen at this point. The team is just bad.Jake: How's your butt Benny? That sounds really weird, but he has to be feeling pressure at this point. They have to figure something out, soon. Two seasons in a row at dead last. At least they're consistent? SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2014 7:00 PM vs NER
