With the U.S. Open Cup’s third round complete, the draw for next month’s fourth round has already taken place.
Real Salt Lake will be hosting Seattle Sounders FC 2 (USL) on June 16th at 8 p.m. MT courtesy of U.S. Soccer.
The Royals will be looking to avenge a fourth round defeat after last year’s away loss to the Atlanta Silverbacks (NASL). A home win against Sounders FC 2 this year would send them to the fifth round putting them just four rounds away from the finals once again — since being runners-up to D.C. United in the 2013 U.S. Open Cup finals.

Speaking of home games, RSL has some of the best home field advantages in MLS, but despite that they haven’t exactly used it to their advantage this season.
The club’s home record is 2W-3D-1L giving them just 9 points out of a total 18 points. Even with a 3-0 home win against New York City FC — in which Rio Tinto Stadium set a new attendance record of 20,801 — you have to wonder if their current form at home will play a factor.
Real Salt Lake is known for winning in front of their supporters so hosting the fourth round fixture in this year’s U.S. Open Cup should be a win. Since the beginning of the 2008 MLS season, RSL boasts an impressive 88W-36D-19L record in its last 143 home games (all competitions).
A closer look at their home record during all of their competitions:
72W-33D-14L during the regular season
6W-1D-1L during the CONCACAF Champions League
5W-2D-2L during the playoffs
5W-0D-2L during the U.S. Open Cup
Head coach Jeff Cassar will surely be looking forward to an extended home stretch from June-July. May 30th’s road game against Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be their last one until June 24th against the New York Red Bulls.
That should give the team enough time to hopefully re-establish their home field advantage this year otherwise they could be in for another fourth round exit — a loss to a USL club from the third tier of American soccer.
