The first four games have been full of drama, red cards, and goals for Real Salt Lake. A 2-2 draw with Orlando City, a 2-1 win over Seattle, a 2-2 draw against Portland, and a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City. RSL has gotten three red cards, one to Demar Phillips in the Orlando game, one to Beckerman and one to Olave in the Portland match, and a Disciplinary Committee decision to suspend El Burrito from a tackle in that same Portland match.
To go along with suspensions, RSL has been bitten by the injury bug. Javi Morales has a rib injury that kept him out of the SKC match. Omar Holness suffered a seizure and a shoulder injury, so he’s out for a while. Injuries and suspensions however, have not stopped RSL from getting results in every game so far.
RSL has not lost a game this season (even though we’re only four games in). Joao Plata has been a huge reason. He’s scored three goals this season with three assists. They’ve scored two goals in each game and have led in each game. The defense has collapsed and allowed comebacks to tie the game. The front three of El Burrito, Joao Plata and Yura Movsisyan has been dangerous, stretching defenses and scoring goals.
There’s been some inconsistency on the defense with red cards. Phillips got the red card first, allowing Chris Wingert an opportunity to start. He hasn’t disappointed. He’s performed well in his appearances, strengthening the back line and frustrating his opponents.
With four games down and 8 points, the rest of the season will be a fun season to watch.
